There was a brief respite from the lousy weather we have been having and as a true Vancouverite I immediately headed for the beach. Ashley and I first played a little basketball and then we walked a bit and took a few photos. Now that I have had a bit of experience with my flash I find myself taking more and more flash photos. This was my favorite one. I suppose the fact that Ashley is in it plays a big factor.

Diptych exercise
I stumbled on this photographic collaboration from laz'andre's posts at the Flickers Photo Club group. I tried a couple and find the exercise an interesting exercise in creativity. I will keep trying more.
"cabin feever"
It sure feels like it. WIth all the snow, wind and rain we haven't been able to go out much except maybe to the mall which absolutely bores me. And no photography so I studied the shadows in the downstairs bathroom and decided to shoot a few. Interesting how much we see if we focus a little bit.
bewildered
It has been a strange winter. We've had 4 rounds of snow, there has been storms and some rain. The storms have caused a lot of damage and Stanley Park was specially hard hit. The rain and snow are kind of 'normal' but the strong winds are new to me.

ashley's gift
Ashley made a poem for me on my birthday. I love it.
My Dad (The Dude)
My dad is a dude
he's never really rude
and he doesn't have a fish
that's a dude
named Jude.
My dad's name is Luis
When he sneezes he goes kabloghphoo-is
One thing you'll never miss
Is his famous big fat kiss.
He's very funny
With lotsa money
He likes to runny
In the sunny.
He likes to poo
While watching the news
And buys a fish
that's a dude
named jude.

It's taken me a while to get here but this garden just seemed out of the way for me. But with a little time on our hands after Alyssa's doctor's appointment we drove around and finally found the garden. The garden was quite barren but it is easy to see that it would probably look nice during the flower seasons. Even then I found it interesting and with my newly photographic eye, I just enjoyed it. A plus was the Minotour and Hare sculpture which is part of the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale exhibit. More photos can be found here: http://reyeslp.smugmug.com/gallery/2334032 .
Alyssa had a doctor's appointment at UBC and since her class was at 12 we had time to look around UBC. I was intimidated by the core area of UBC, it seemed so crowded and busy, so we just drove around the perimeter. I finally located the UBC Botanical Garden which I knew had the minotour sculpture. We finally had to ask a lady who gave us a map and directions and we found the sculpture away from the area where we were. I think this is the last of the sculptures which is part of the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale. There are 2 I couldn't find and believe they no longer exist. D200 and SB-800
I always bring my camera to experiment with different lighting conditions and at this party I messed up the WB. I reviewed my last D70 results and the outcome was great. The D200 results this time were erratic and too warm. It looks like the behaviour of the D200 with regards to flash is much different to the D70. I am amazed at the internet and all the forums. I went to DPReview and search for D200 WB and there was an exact duplicate of my shooting situation and the recommendations to avoid it in the future. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=21416035
In this post I also discovered that Photoshop has camera filter options which can be used instead of actual physical filters. Incredible...

is this man holding on to this package for dear life? Aha! A birthday present...a late christmas gift...the new weapon...the D200. A new adventure begins. The D70 and D100 are both looking old in the teeth with both having around 70K shots apiece. The D70 has been doing hiccups lately with the focus intermittently working/not working and I fear that it would finally give up when I am using it on a paid shoot. So I couldn't hold off any longer on the D200.
printers
Printers have really gone a long way as well as computers. The one at the top is an HP that I use for everyday use. Alyssa also uses it for her school work. It also sends and receives faxes and yesterday I finally managed to send one out. I still haven't figured out how to receive one. The middle one is a Canon IP6600D Photo Printer which I bought just before Christmas. The results are awesome and I printed off calendars this year as Christmas presents to friends. I also printed some of my other pictures and put matting on them and I thought the results were quite pleasing...but the paper and ink costs a fortune. The bottom one is a compact printer which was on sale at Best Buy for something like $50 and I couldn't resist it. I intend to use it for printing snaps.

Today was her day. Rustled her up an omelet this morning. Then we picked up April her friend and after picking up sandwiches at Subway it was off to Watermania. That took us to dinner at Tropika where she indulged in KL Crab. To top it off we had 2 fried bananas with ice cream. A great day even without a party.
gadgets
Got these 2 gadgets recently. The first is the case for flash cards. It gets a bit difficult/confusing keeping track of cards when shooting so instead of juggling pockets I can just store it all in here. The second case is for cables and connections. I absolutely love this one. I can connect the PC in so many ways...to cameras, USB, firewire. Makes it easier that carrying all the differect cables around.
Lightscribe, Mobile Phone Tools, Cafe Americano
Learning is an never ending process. The past 3 days I have been trying to figure out how to use LightScribe to make labels. Bit cludgy but it works. Had to figure out how to convert mp3 to CD format to make a final music CD. Then there was Phone Tools which was so frustrating as it wouldn't recognize the cell phone. long the way I had to learn to convert songs from the Itunes format and then crop them to ringtones size and eventually load and use it on the cell. Cafe Americano was easier but I am afraid I am not quite there yet. 3 cups of water, 6 TB of expresso coffee and 5 minutes later, freshly brewed coffee.

This is another of the sculptures for the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale. After lunch at Stepho's I wanted to drive along the Stanley Park Seawall to see the damage the recent storm had caused. Stanley Park had been closed for a while until they had cleared up some of the damage. I remembered that I hadn't seen this sculpture so we did a quick stop. Oooops I didn't realize it was this and there was no sign indicating that it was part of the Biennale as the other sculptures did. The 3 girls were waiting in the car so I rushed the shots and I only confirmed this after we got home. Oh well...this almost wraps up the set and the one that I know still exists is the one at UBC. I am not sure that the others still exist as I cannot find them.
